Hiking the Amalfi Coast & Capri: Self-guided walking holiday

The Amalfi Coast is rightly regarded as one of Europe’s most beautiful coastlines – some even claim it to be the most beautiful coastline in the world. Stretching for about 40 km on the southern side of the Sorrento peninsula, the Amalfi Coast was deemed an ‘outstanding example of a Mediterranean landscape’ by UNESCO in 1997. The area is characterised by steep cliffs rising dramatically out of the blue Mediterranean Sea, dotted with small, pastel-coloured towns which cling precariously to the rugged shoreline and which are beautifully framed by the lush, green Lattari mountains behind.

Escape the crowds and walk Amalfi’s wooded back country

Because of its beauty, the Amalfi Coast has been a tourist magnet for many years. Wander just a little away from the crowded towns, however, and you will suddenly find yourself in blissful tranquility, among lemon groves on terraced hillsides. These densely-wooded hills  are perfect hiking territory, criss-crossed as they are by ancient but well-marked trails with incredible panoramic views over the colourful coastal villages and glittering turquoise sea below.

Just off the tip of the Sorrento peninsula you will find the idyllic and glamorous island of Capri, known as ‘the pearl of the Bay of Naples’. Just like the Amalfi Coast, Capri attracts hordes of tourists. Most of them, however, stick to the island’s two main towns, so on the hiking trails you will have the sublime scenery more or less to yourself as you gaze across the magnificent Gulf of Naples with volcanic Mount Vesuvius towering over the horizon.

This is an ideal place for a relaxing family-friendly walking holiday with some of the very best scenery on the Mediterranean.

Day 1: Arrive in Sorrento

With its spectacular clifftop location, elegant shopping streets and beautiful gardens, Sorrento has attracted foreign visitors for more than two hundred years. From the town’s waterfront there are views over the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius, and the historical town centre abounds with shops, cafes and restaurants. Underneath the town you will find the old harbour Marina Grande with cosy sea view restaurants and a small beach. So if you arrive early in Sorrento you shouldn’t be stuck for things to do and you can look forward to your first Italian meal of the trip.

Day 2: Capri

Distance: 5.3/6.5/6 km | Ascent: 240/280/275 m | Descent: 240/560/280 m | Walking time:  1½/2/2 hrs approx.

Take the ferry from Sorrento’s harbour to Capri – ‘the pearl of the Bay of Naples’. Here you can choose between two different walking routes; a short, easy route from the town of Capri to the Roman Villa Jovis, which belonged to Emperor Tiberius, or a longer coastal route from the town of Anacapri down to the island’s west coast where you have the option to extend the walk by a further 6 km along the coast to The Blue Grotto. You can get around the island by either bus or cable car. Take the ferry back to Sorrento in the late afternoon.

Day 3: Sorrento to Marina del Cantone

Distance: 10/17 km | Ascent: 445/590 m | Descent: 750/1280 m | Walking time: 3/6 hrs approx.

After breakfast you will get a lift from Sorrento to either Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi or, if you prefer a shorter walk, to Termini. From here you walk to Punta Campanelle, which is the tip of the Sorrento peninsula and divides the Bay of Naples from the Bay of Salerno. It is incredibly beautiful here and there are splendid views to Capri. The route also offers views of the Amalfi Coast to one side and of the Bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius to the other side. The day’s hike ends with a descent to the charming coastal village Marina del Cantone where you can go for a swim and rest the legs on a deck chair on the beach.

Overnight: Marina del Cantone

4

Day 4: Loop walk from Marina del Cantone

Distance: 11 km | Ascent: 420 m | Descent: 700 m | Walking time: 4 hrs approx.

Today’s route is not that long but very beautiful. If you want to avoid the first steep bit from Marina del Cantone to Nerano you can take a bus. From Nerano you walk down to the lovely little Bay of Ieranto with great views of Capri and the Amalfi Coast along the way. The beach at the Bay of Ieranto is a perfect spot for a lunch break and a refreshing swim in the blue Mediterranean, so don’t forget your swimming gear! Follow the same way back to Marina del Cantone.

Overnight: Marina del Cantone

Day 5: Sant'Agata to Colli di San Pietro

Distance: 9½ km | Ascent: 329 m | Descent: 416 m | Walking time: 2½ hrs approx.

The day starts with a lift to Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi. The route follows small country lanes and paths that wind through farmed terraces and olive and lemon groves. The first part of the route is along a panoramic path with lovely views over the Amalfi Coast. Halfway through there is a rather steep climb, but afterwards it goes gradually downhill all the way to Colli di San Pietro. From here you take a bus to Amalfi where you will spend the next three nights.

Overnight: Amalfi

Day 6: Sentiero degli Dei

Distance: 12.6 km | Ascent: 70 m | Descent: 711 m | Walking time: 3½-4 hrs approx.

From Amalfi you take the local bus to Bomerano, which is the starting point for the most famous walking trail on the Amalfi Coast: Sentiero degli Dei or in English ’the Path of the Gods’. Magnificent panorama vistas over the coast and the sea accompany you the whole way from Bomerano to colourful Positano where the path ends. It is truly a path worthy of gods and the photo opportunities are innumerous! When you’re finished exploring pretty Positano, known as a jet-set hotspot, then find your way back to Amalfi by either bus or boat.

Overnight: Amalfi

Day 7: Valle delle Ferriere Loop walk

Distance: 10 km | Ascent: 990 | Descent: 990 m | Walking time: 5 hrs approx.

OR

Distance: 11 km | Ascent:780 | Descent: 780 m | Walking time: 5 hrs approx.

For your last walking day, you can choose between two hiking options through the nature reserve of Valle delle Ferriere situated behind Amalfi. Both routes pass through the villages of Pontone and Pogerola. The shorter but more demanding walk takes you via the Madonna dei Fuondi Sanctuary, passing by ancient mills and rivers with views of the villages below. The longer loop offers spectacular views of the bay of Salerno and the high cliffs of the Amalfi coast.
