Self-guided hiking holidays in the Salzkammergut
The Salzkammergut region is magnificent even by Austrian standards, with towering snow-capped peaks, wooded mountain slopes, lush green valleys and ice-blue lakes. Its defining feature has always been the dramatic visual effect created by its countless lakes framed by the immense peaks of the Northern Alps. This newly established long-distance trail links these highlights in a comprehensive way, never seen before.
The 350-kilometer Salzkammergut BergeSeen Trail (S-Trail) was launched in 2017 as the first long-distance trail in the Salzkammergut. It is a multi-day circular walk, starting and ending in the picturesque lakeside town of Gmunden. It can be hiked either in several stages (section hikes) or as a complete 20-stage circular route. The trail connects no fewer than 35 lakes and is well-marked throughout with the S-Trail logo. Most stages of the trail end in towns with excellent tourism infrastructure and overnight accommodation. A few routes lead to remote inns or alpine huts which guarantee a romantic mountain atmosphere.
We offer the 5 sections of the S-Trail as self-guided walking holidays of varying difficulty level. Sections 2, 4 and 5 are ideal for families, while sections 1 and 3 are more challenging hiking trips. All trips include luggage transportation, maps, detailed route notes and GPS tracks.
