Self-guided walking holiday in Mallorca

Mallorca is rightly famous for its stunning beaches lapped by the turquoise Mediterranean sea. Away from the playas, however, the island’s landscape is surprisingly wild and untouched. The top spot for a walking holiday in Mallorca is undoubtedly the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range in the northwest of the island. These limestone mountains form a dramatic landscape of peaks and deep valleys, largely undiscovered except by hikers. Well-marked routes lead you through dramatic mountain landscapes, across private estates with orange, almond and olive trees and down to rocky coastlines interspersed with quiet, sandy coves.

Nestled in this stunning scenery the true gems of Mallorca can be found: Charming honey-coloured villages such as Sóller, Deia and Valldemossa offer glimpses of a slower pace of life that seems to belong to a bygone age. Taking in the quiet charm of Mallorca’s hinterland as you walk from one picturesque hilltop village to another, you will surely understand why the region’s unique cultural and geographical features have been inscribed by UNESCO on to its World Heritage List.

This self-guided walking holiday in Mallorca is also available as an 8-day trip, with 2 extra walking days and 2 overnight stays in Pollença on the north of the island. Please contact us for info and prices.

Day 1: Arrival in Valldemossa

Beautifully set on a gentle rise in an idyllic valley of olive, oak and almond trees, Valldemossa is steeped in old-world charm. Most visitors come to see the old Carthusian monastery, which was a favourite haunt of composer Frederic Chopin and writer George Sand. The town’s cobbled, tree-lined alleys and impressive villas reward aimless wandering, and the views over the surrounding valley and mountains are spectacular.

Valldemossa can easily be reached by public bus from Palma de Mallorca.

Overnight: Valldemossa

Day 2: Circular walk from Valldemossa

Distance: 15 km | Ascent: 700 m | Descent: 700 m | 6 hrs approx.

Your first walk is a hugely popular circular route from Valldemossa on the Archduke’s Trail (Camí de s’Arxiduc), an impressive dry-stone path along the ridge between Deia and Valldemossa. The path was built in the late 19th century at the demand of the Archduke Luis Salvador, for no other purpose than to offer an easily walked route along the mountain backbone whilst enjoying amazing views over the north western coastline.

Overnight: Valldemossa

Day 3: Deia to Port Sóller

Distance: 14 km | Ascent: 280 m | Descent: 440 m | 5½ hrs approx.

Beginning after breakfast with a short transfer to the idyllic artists’ colony of Deia. Starting from here along a cobbled path through the olive groves, this is a delightful and relatively easy walk to the coastal town of Port Sóller. Your route follows the coastline, through quiet Mediterranean woods (pines, oaks and madrone trees) and across a private estate where the owners serve delicious fresh orange juice to walkers.

Overnight: Port Sóller

Day 4: Cala Tuent to Port Sóller

Distance: 15 km | Ascent: 650 m | Descent: 610 m | 6 hrs approx.

After a taxi transfer to Cala Tuent, a summer village with a lovely quiet beach, you begin your 6-hour walk. Your first follow the coastline to Port Sóller and then by way of the farm at Balitx d’Avall, situated among orange groves and olive orchards in one of Mallorca’s most remote valleys.

Overnight: Port Sóller

Day 5: Circular walk from Port Sóller

Distance: 7.5 km | Ascent: 270 m | Descent: 270 m | 3 hrs approx.

From the port, you do a steep ascent to the cliffs which form a natural breakwater overlooking the bay. At the top, you have lovely views from ‘Torre Picada’, along the rocky coastline to the tiny island of S’Illeta just offshore. From the peak, you do a steep descent along a ravine to reach ‘Sa Punta Llarga’, a promontory which affords a lovely vista point back from sea level.

Overnight: Port Sóller
